Selick came to calarts and said Phil Knight named it Laika after the first dog in space, and he liked that it had a hard 'k' sound, like his other company , NIKE.
Well, I thought it sounded like a Russian name for a dog, so...there you go!
Wasn't that dog killed during the mission?
