New Star Trek Previews

If you're curious about the newly-revamped Star Trek (The Original Series, or TOS for short) episodes, you can see previews for four different episodes at startrek.com. The effects do stick out a little by virtue of them being slicker than the live-action footage, but it does look pretty good. It's also interesting to see these ads treat the material as if it's never aired before, with modern "In a world..." sales techniques!

You can also get free copies of all of the trailers for each of the remastered episodes on iTunes. Here's the direct link to them:

You can also purchase some of them there as well. Check out this story I did on them last week:

Hey! I saw your story, but I didn't know you could get free trailers on iTunes. Cool!

Are the new versions being broadcast? If not, I might buy one of my favorites and check them out.

The before and after on those shots of the Enterprise is almost startling. I didn't remember the originals as being, well, so shabby.

I'm not crazy about Lucasing older movies and television, but this doesn't bother me that much. I don't know why, really.

Yeah, the original effects are pretty cheap-looking. Still, I think changing them makes it lopsided the other way. Plus, the new effects aesthetic is still a little too much like the later shows (see the phaser fire, transporter shimmer, etc).

Oh, Geez. Does George Lucas have something contageous?

Guess we should do digital effects for The Wizard of Oz and a 5.1 remix of every Buster Keaton film.

Art may never be finished, but it does reach the point where it should be abandoned.

I guess the fact that Lucas' gambit worked - that he made a lot more money on the special editions - is going to encourage a lot more of this kind of behavior. The Trek fans may hate it, but they'll probably still buy some episodes and check it out. At least it doesn't always work - remember the E.T. special edition? We need a few more of those!

But I agree with you - it was totally unnecessary to do - which is why I bought all of it on DVD before the tinkering began. At least they are available that way...

The most annoying thing is, I'll bet the prints are beautifully cleaned up (they look like they are in the ads). Too bad no one thought that that was worth doing for the boxed sets.

Check the Trek.com pages for the local broadcast airdates.
