Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull

NEW YORK (AP) -- The title of the new "Indiana Jones" movie, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford, has been revealed.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" will be in theaters May 22, 2008.

The title of the long-awaited fourth installment of the adventure series was announced by Shia LaBeouf, who co-stars with Ford in the film, at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The new Indy adventure, which is set in the 1950s, also stars Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Karen Allen.

Sean Connery, who played dad to Ford's globe-trotting archaeologist in 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," will not reprise the role in the new movie.

The series began in 1981 with "Raiders of the Lost Ark," followed by "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" in 1984.

In promotional photos, the 65-year-old Ford appears fit as ever.

"I have to say, he looks amazing," Kathleen Kennedy, the film's co-executive producer, along with George Lucas, told The Associated Press in July. "He looks fantastic in the outfit."

Bummer. I was rooting for "Indiana Jones and the City of Gods" myself. Sounds like we're in Sankara Stone territory again.

PS - Here's some not-very-encouraging background on the crystal skull thing.

I'm not that into it. The last few sequels (Ocean's Thirteen, Live Free Or Die Hard) I've seen weren't bad, but they fell out of my head within a day after seing them.

I know it's hard to top the Ark of the Covenant, but I don't think crystal skulls are a very good McGuffin. It feels more like a New Age urban legend than an artifact to me.

The “Ocean” and “Die Hard” movies while entertaining aren’t exactly Indiana Jones - Steven Soderbergh is no Steven Spielberg and Len Wiseman is no... actually who is he? Spielberg by his own admission, already made a bad Indiana Jones film - Temple of Doom - I don’t think he’ll make that mistake twice. I’m predicting that not only will the film be great, and I bet it makes more money than any of the previous Indiana Jones films.

I can't get optimistic about sequels that follow other sequels that aren't all that good. Take Sean Connery out of Last Crusade, and you've got a forgettable villain, a tepid love interest, and just-okay effects work. The Grail is a better choice than magic stones or crystal skulls, but even that's no Lost Ark.

I need a stronger preceding sequel to get excited about another one, like looking forward to Star Trek III because Wrath of Khan was so good. Granted, it didn't turn out as well I would've liked.

I think Die Hard is a terrific movie, and it influenced action films as much - arguably more - than the first Raiders did.

The new Jones might make the most money, but after folding in inflation and the fact that you have twenty-six additional years of fans accumulated, what does that really mean? Each of the more recent Bond films have made more money than their predecessors, but Casino Royale notwithstanding, I don't think that makes them better - or even as good - as the best of the early films.

Oh, who are you kidding honey, you and I will be in line, opening day, wearing "Raiders" T-shirts...seriously! :-)

I must however stick up for my fabu "Die Hard"--the original, not the "Hey! We can make MORE money on these" sequels. It truly was groundbreaking and has really informed and flavored all action flics that followed it. "Indiana Jones" was more a big ol' smooch to a grander, more festive time of film-making. A time of true audiencce entertainment!

I love them both! And am crossing my fingers for this new installment. It's hard tho...Koepp makes me cringe.

Now play nice boys (Jeff especially! Some of us are still "Yay! Movies" and have gone completely to the Dark Side.

XOXO

I was trying to type "Haven't gone completely over to the dark side" but, typed too fast and then hit "enter" out of habit. Oops.

I like Die Hard too. My point was that the current Die Hard or Oceans films are no indicator of how Indiana Jones 4 will be. I just can't wait to see Harrison Ford wearing that hat with the John Williams theme playing. Yay! Movies!

Oh, I agree!

But, man alive! It CAN be hard to keep your optimism in the face of such dissappointment with past sequels to movies I've loved! MIB II was a smack in the face, POTC II was so swollen it didn't make sense (still, I had fun and went to see the third installment).

So, I'm determined to go with fresh eyes, and a song in my heart! Besides, who DOESN'T love the idea of seeing the "Man in the Hat"?! Crazy people!

YAY! MOVIES!

On the up side? - regardless of how the movie turns out? New merchandise! Lego Indy, Sideshow Indy, Hasbro Indy! Sweeet.

There's never really been any good Raiders toys... until now!
