Toy OTD: Proctor & Gamble Pogo Promotional Figures
These are some of my favorite Pogo items - I've heard that Walt Kelly actually sculpted these. I love their rough-hewn quality, and it would explain why they evoke the strip's drawing style so effectively. They were shrink-wrapped with bottles of Biz, Downy, Bold, and Spic 'N' Span detergents, so you'd get get one free with purchase, like a super-awesome cereal prize!
Six figures were offered in 1969 - Pogo Possum, Albert Alligator, Porky Pine, Churchy La Femme (the word play escaped me, naturally), Howland Owl and Beauregard Hound. I had Pogo, Howland, Albert as a kid - I found Beauregard at a yard sale, Porky at a flea market, and Churchy at a toy show (thank goodness someone was willing to sell him individually - I've heard he's the rarest).I don't think these are all that expensive or rare - Pogo, Albert, Porky, Churchy, Howland, all start at $10 or less on eBay, with Beauregard starting at $2.50. There's a good multi-figure auction too, if you want to save on shipping. They're great vintage toys at bargain prices!
