Toy OTD: Eldon Billy Blastoff With Space Crawler (1968-71)

This figure is one of my favorite space toys! I didn't grow up with Major Matt Mason, so I imprinted on a beat-up Billy Blastoff that I found at a flea market. That one didn't survive my childhood, so I picked up a spiffy, operational version from eBay much later on.

It's a clever format for a toy - let the figure itself power all of the accessories (even his laser pistol). Billy's backpack is motorized, so you simply plug it into any of the vehicles in the line, and away you go! There were several different conveyances to choose from, as well as a full-blown moon base, and Robbie, his robot buddy. Billy was also available as a fireman and a scuba diver (there may be still other variants), each with still more accessories. As far as I know, the astronaut is the most common, with a walking version made a little later. It makes sense that Billy Blastoff was the most popular of the line - once you come up with a catchy name like that, anything else just isn't gonna cut it!

These aren't as popular as the Major Matt toys, and they're also easier to find in good shape (no wire armatures to break). Some items can get pricey, depending on rarity and how difficult they are to find complete. There's an eBay auction for a decent-condition Billy with several vehicles that's currently at $45.12 + shipping.

Check out a Billy Blastoff TV spot here!

That's a super charming design and if my last name wasn't what it is, I'd name my first born Billy Blastoff ;)

I remember Billy, but i was a total Major Matt Mason geek. Between that and Hot Wheels, Mattel owned my childhood when it came to toys. As for his name? It sounds like a "John K" character.

Those were cool toys to be sure, I just don't have the nostalgia for them. I know at some point I'll have to add a Major Matt to my collection!

The name "Billy Blastoff" may be goofy, but it's catchy and cute! At least I think so.

Jeff,
I really like your blog and you have some of the most interesting stories/articles/toy info; however, as a person who is on the computer all day - the white type on black is impossible to read especially some of the longer posts...it may be worth changing some for readability.

Hi David! Thanks for the feedback.
The problem is - the only way that I know how to change my blog's appearance is to swap out the template. If I do that, all my links and customizations are gone. So I'm not sure how to fix that aspect without breaking a lot of other things.

Jeff,

Blogger is really helpful there -- if you go under Layout then Template you can select Fonts and Colors and change all the settings of your Blog keeping all the content as is. The main thing is to use the "new" Blogger which should upgrade without losing everything, if you haven't already. My blog The Graphic Image, uses the same Template as yours and you can see my changes if you want by going there.

Ah! I am using the new Blogger. I'll check it out!

I don't know if I'll be able to customize my blog template:

Blogger Layouts customization is not supported for blogs hosted on non-Blog*Spot servers. To use Layouts, you'll need to host your blog on blogspot.com (Blogger's free hosting service) or a custom domain (point your own registered domain name to your blog).

This seems to contradict itself. Can I customize my blog if it's redirected to jeffpidgeon.com, or not?

Holy crap! Its been close to 35 years since I saw Billy and I had the scuba set (currently negotiating with a seller as we speak). I saw your wonderful collections of toys on flickr via the drawn.ca and I was impressed to see such a devotee. Anyhoo, when I saw this character,he looked familiar. For YEARS I couldnt place a name with the toy. I had this little guy in my great aunts home in Lancashire England would you believe.
So thank you Jeff for giving me starting point to find Billy! I look forward to seeing more of your collections and if you have any more leads as to where to get Billy other than ebay please dont hesitate to show us! Many thanks
