Nerdy Fan Art, Circa 1983
Lifted directly from one of the issues (maybe a cover). I read Cerebus from about issue #40 to the very end (#300). It got progressively harder for me as I went along - in general, I'm not sure I'd recommend going past the end of Church & State (though there is a lot of interesting material past that point).Labels: cerebus, copying, dave sim, drawing, fan art, fandom, jeff pidgeon

I picked up Cerebus at around Jaka's Story and stopped at Reads. I found myself unable to reconcile to Dave Sim's philosophy so I stopped reading the book. I must say that Gerhard (he does all the background art)is an unbelievably good inker and artist.
I've met Dave Sime and Gerhard twice and it's hard to get around the politeness and gentleness of Dave Sim in person to the point of view presented in the latter half of the Cerebus chronicles.
Yeah, I know - it's kind of weird. I ignored his philosophies and kept going, but he lost a lot of readers with that stuff.
I had the same experience with this series--and at the same time. I suspect we're among thousands of others with our reactions!
Incidentally, I took some pics this morning with the 'phone of the Croatian Rat Kindereggs and immediately uploaded them to my Flickr(one can't discern much about them on the iphone, they're so tiny). They're terrible! ALL totally out of focus...so I'll have to replace them tonight after trying to get some better shots. But just an FYI. : )
I loved Cerebus!!! I discovered Cerebus my freshman year of Highschool (around issue #36, High Society) and eagerly read up until Dave himself made an appearance as the God of Cerebus's world (Mothers and Daughters, I think.) It was wierd to see a guy who once proudly declared himself a "feminist"(Comic's Scene 1982) become a a strangely combative mysoginist. I heard somewhere that at the end he and Gerhard could barely stand to speak to each other.
I'm quite sceptical of Dave's theory that feminism is the root of all of the Western world's problems. Funnily enough many people at one point thought he was a Randian. That Gerhard sure can crosshatch though.
Didn't he get involved in a bitter breakup or divorce, which precipitated the change in the stories? I have vague memories of reading that he went round the bend as a result.
How cringe-making.
He did go through a bad divorce with Deni, his then-wife and business partner. I have a feeling that might have had a lot to do with it.
