Soapbox Time

One of my Flickr friends let me know about this, so I thought I'd mention it. She re-posted in in her photostream, copied from one of her friends. She mentions another contact as her source, but I didn't see a third posting of it on Flickr - maybe that was via email. I've trimmed a little, but here it is:

"Guillermo Vargas Habacuc is a Costa Rican who claims to be artist. The past month of August he made a exhibition in a gallery of Managua (Nicaragua), hunted a street dog, tied it with one short cord to one of the walls of the gallery and let it die of hunger and thirst. According to him, that act of cowardly sadism is art. Now this torturador has been invited to participate in 2008 in the prestigious Central American Biennial of Honduras. There is an international campaign to collect signatures to request that this invitation is retired."

***************************************************************************************

If you're interested, you can sign the petition here (I did). There's also another posting that seems to say that the The Museum of Art and Contemporary Design (MADC) of Costa Rica is aware of the petition and has rejected it. I haven't found anything that would indicate that this story isn't true, but it's unclear when the Biennial would take place (took place?), so it's possible that this all may be a moot point.

Please feel free to post additional information that you find in the comments section.

I see every day, sadly, the change coming over so many people. The callous treatment of animals is only a precursor to hurting mankind.
How sad, and to copy that paragraph and put it as many places possible seems reasonable.

"Artist" indeed....
(SPIT!)

My god. This is the act of a sadist of the worst kind. The man (I use the term loosely) is a criminal.

Jeff,

You may want to check out this page on Snopes concerning this "artist". If it is indeed true, it's an atrocity, but it appears that there's some question as to the actual outcome.
