"They're Young, They're Beautiful, They Kill People"

"I was arguing with Jack Warner about 'Bonnie and Clyde,' and he said to me, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's fine, kid, that's your opinion.' Then he says, 'You have your opinion, but you do know whose name is up on the water tower, right?' So I said, 'Yeah, hey, look, it's got my initials!' "

-- Warren Beatty, qouted from Geoff Boucher's great LA Times article about the genesis and impact of Bonnie & Clyde. Read it here!

Great article, Jeff. Thanks. I've always loved the story behind Bonnie and Clyde. My wife's cousin is married to Robert Benton and I've heard the stories of how that script changed his life.

As he tells it, he and his wife were at their humble home, when the doorbell rang....she answered the
door to find Warren Beatty standing in front of her...he said he was looking for Robert Benton because he was interested in buying his script "Bonnie and Clyde". Beatty said he had heard about the project and was thinking about doing it.

Slightly stunned, Robert Benton gladly handed the script over to Beatty, who then left. Twenty minutes later, Beatty called Benton on the phone and said, "Listen, I'm on page 15...I want to buy it." Benton tells of how he tempered Beatty's enthusiasm..."Warren, wait until you get to page 45." An hour later he called back..."I know what you mean about page 45, but I still wanna buy it."

The rest is history...which is well documented in the Times story!

Thanks again for the great blog. Cheers, Bob

Hi Jeff, thanks for your interest in the article, but please remember that posting the ENTIRE text and no link to the source material undermines all our labor. Please do send some traffic our way if you like or respect the work we do.

Hi Geoff,
I do have a link to the article - it's in the words, "LA Times".

Ultimately, though, I doubt people would use it if the whole article's already readable here. I'll change the post.
