Kumo-Kun Is Coming!

I'm announcing my next vinyl toy!

Kumo-Kun is based on a T-shirt design I created in 1998 or '99. Happily, Vin Teng is taking up the sculpting chores once again, and I hope to have the finished toy ready for San Diego Comic-Con 2009. Keep your eyes peeled for progress shots as they come in!

PS - Please let me know what you think of the design and color scheme. I'm always interested in feedback!

UPDATE: The black version is the color scheme I want to use, even though the brown version was the original design (I think the black/blue/purple colors will work better on the toy). Let me know which is your favorite!

This is great news Jeff! I was always a big fan of this character! As for the color palette, I love the brown, orange & pink. The only critique that I would have is the pink and orange seem to bleed together in the drawing. Maybe a darker pink would work? or a complementary blue to contrast with the orange? Just some suggestions, but no matter what is chosen, you know I'll buy one!

Hey congrats!!! The design looks really good to me! Can't wait to see what Vin's pass will look like :)

Actually, just after I posted this, I realized that I'm actually going to do another color scheme entirely!

I think the bleed-over you're experiencing is due more to the color xerox/scanning degradation, but I'll keep an eye on that if I decide to use it.

Jeff,

Cute, interesting character. I, too, look forward to seeing it after Vin turns it into a 3D sculpture.

Still, with this news, I'm assuming it may be awhile before there's a beaver variant.

I certainly understand -- but it might be good to mention why (the lessons learned about the inability to reuse molds, costs, etc.) because that's an interesting part of your journey into toy production.

I like the purple, but might play with the complimentary (secondary color)

... just my two cents

Hey Jeff! My2ยข

I actually like your original colors much better, feels more retro and seems to fit the character better. I agree with mdouglas on the contrast though, paint on plastic might need more contrast.

(i'll buy one either way!)

Man, this is a tough one... The brown, orange and pink one looks much better now, but I dig the black and purple one too. I love them both! I think you're just going to have to do variants! :)

I'd go with the original too--though I do like both very much.

You may not have to wait long for a new beaver toy, Leo - Frank Kozik is finishing up his Happy Beaver variant as we speak!

Kozik is not Pidgeon and Pidgeon is not Kozik ...

... But since my wife has a very small collection of beavers -- she's a graduate of OSU -- I may have to check out Kozik's variant.

Can't fault me for wanting a Pidgeon red, shaved or dirty beaver.

Hmm - it's tough but I think the original colours are my favourite. Also - super excited about the Kozik beaver variant!

I say CLEAR!!!!! Or clear purple and black. Yes! Or metallic paint.

Have you thought about keeping the sculpt basic and just painting on the face and detail?

I have thought about that (and it's been suggested before, too), but I think I want a sculpted, dimensional face on the figure.

While I really like simply sculpted toys with printed-on faces (Lego men, Mighty Muggs, Kubrick figures, etc), I also really like the sculpts for my toys to hold up without any paint. So that's what's driving that decision.
