Chris Wedge Throws Hat In Live-Action Ring

"Ice Age" helmer Chris Wedge has signed on to direct Brian Selznick's magic-themed children's novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" for Graham King's GK Films, Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil and Warner Bros.

"The Aviator" scribe John Logan has been tapped to pen the adaptation.

King and Infinitum Nihil's Christi Dembrowski will produce the live-action film, which centers on an orphaned boy who secretly lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station and looks after the clocks. He gets caught up in a mystery adventure when he attempts to repair a mechanical man.

I am very surprised that there has been no attempt to adapt the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander to the big screen. Disney put out an animated adaptation of The Black Cauldron (not a very good attempt I must say) quite a few years ago but I think the books would make excellent live action films. Not only are they some of the best fantasy novels out there the novels are concise enough that much of the content would not have to be lost to editing. They have plenty of action, romance and life lessons to make excellent young adult films.

I agree! I'd love to see the books filmed with the same actors over the story's arc, a la Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings.

Yep, I'd say that would be a great idea as Taran and Eilonwy grow older as the story progress between each book.
It's a shame that the Disney version diverted so much from the source material as I recall having no problem with the animation. I haven't seen the movie in years but I remember being pretty disappointed in it. No Gwydion and no Ellidyr, who's tragic part in the story of the Black Cauldron plays such a pivotal role in the effectiveness of the novel. So does the character Adaon.

I liked the idea of combining the first two books, but even though I saw the movie first, it didn't really line up with how I imagined things when I read it.
