Ralph McQuarrie Concept Paintings For Battlestar Galactica

What do you do when it's 1978, and you're whipping up a Star Wars clone for television? You hire one of the same concept artists! Check out this great gallery of inspirational artwork produced by McQuarrie for the original Battlestar Galactica - neat!

I think some of this art was cannibalized for toy packaging and TV Guide ads - if it wasn't, it was ripped off by other artists pretty convincingly.

Thanks to Derek Thompson, io9.com, and galactica.tv for the links!

Too bad the show's crummy FX didn't look like this beautiful concept painting.

Poor Lorne Greene should have stayed on the Ponderosa.

At the time, I thought the effects work looked really good - as I understand it, they got John Dykstra after he and Lucas parted ways.

The main problem was, even though the show was the most expensive program made at that time, they still had to re-use a lot of their space shots over and over and over! It got old pretty fast.

Plus stunt casting aging stars like Fred Astaire didn't exactly seprate the Battlestar Galactica from other ABC shows like Love Boat & Fantasy Island.

Ahhhh....McQuarrie!

Wow! I know this image, but I didn't know he did it.

I love how he chiseled the mighty Galactica right out of the canvas (or artboard).

Nice!

(and thanks for the plug!)
