The Day The Dude Stood Still

Here's a trailer for Fox's upcoming Day The Earth Stood Still remake, starring Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, and John Cleese (?). The interrogation scene is interesting, and there's a lot in the story that would still be relevant. Still, I'm such a huge fan of the original, I can't help but feel that it's an exercise in futility. Judge for yourself!

UPDATE: Not that my blog is limping along as far as posting/publishing goes, here's another blurb on the film, featuring some rejected concept art for Gort. I like the massive, imposing feeling of the design, but I think it'd need to be simpler - even though the original robot is clearly a suit, the stark simplicity vividly suggests a far superior technology - large, heavy shapes holding back enormous power.
It just occurred to me - who's going to score this version?

Tyler Bates is the man who has to go head-to-head with Bernard Herrmann. Not an enviable job.

Consider how the original tied into the national fear of the height of the Cold War era. While today's "there are terrorists waiting under every rock" paranoia is extreme, audiences are a more educated and realistic bunch. Tapping into their collective fears may not be so easy as it was for the original.
All that said... yeah, there is an air of futility about the film from what the trailer shows.
And welcome back.

The fear of The Other is a pretty powerful thing. The original was very smart about withholding Klaatu's face for some time so he would seem as creepy as possible. Grounding him so quickly in the trailer is a mistake, I think (though I can think of at least two reasons why they did it).
I'll check out the reviews when this one comes out. Who knows? Maybe we'll get a free screening of it at work.
welcome back.
Thanks! I trimmed about a hundred posts out of the archives - things that wouldn't date well, or posts with dead links - and that seems to have helped. It's still not easy to post images, though.
