Toy OTD: Benny Gums, Big Shot Toys & Ron English MC Supersized Vinyl Figure (2006)

Translations from 2-D to 3-D are always tricky, as so much interpretation is involved. Here's a great example of how to do it right! It's a terrific sculpt that captures the essence of the original Ron English artwork. Mr. English tweaked the character to make him a more compact toy design, and the good folks at Big Shot Toyworks did the rest.

There's a wonderful attention to detail here. The sculpt is simple but vivid, emphasizing the extra weight on MC's face and torso. Balance isn't sacrificed, though - the figure stands well on its own. There's not much in the way of articulation or poseability here, but I doubt the core audience for this toy would ask for much in that regard. It's a display piece, pure and simple.

The paint apps and color choices are great, mimicking the famous fast-food colors well. The bling accessory is a nice touch, a separate piece rather than sculpting it as part of the torso. Great!

The packaging is super-cool, too - a colorful, eye-catching version of the character combined with an aggressive pattern on a sturdy box. Now, that's what I call shelf presence!

The original vinyl figure came in at least three colorways, and was popular enough to inspire later lines of three-inch blind boxed figures and randomized mini-keychains. Of course, the big figures are long sold out, but there is one just like mine for sale on eBay for $450. Grit your teeth and drop the cash - or set up a favorite search and cross your fingers for a bargain. Good luck!
