Star Wars, Via Saul Bass

Star Wars fan films never seem to run out of variations. Here's the opening titles as if Saul Bass had designed them. I'm surprised that this wasn't cut to John Williams music, but the jazz definitely gives it that Man With A Golden Arm vibe. Enjoy!

PS - Naturally, there's a variation on the variation - a modified title sequence for the Special Edition. Very funny!

Greetings From Hell

Swazzlers Sean and Patrick Johnson performed the characters (from pre-recorded voice tracks) for a series of JibJab Sendables - short clips that are clearly a cut above your average e-card! Check out all six and mail them to your friends! Where else can you watch a puppet Hitler (background) being tortured? Don't answer that.

Unfortunately Named Toy Dept.

Here's an ad from a far more innocent time... uh, 1975 or so. Okay, so maybe this product had a really, really naive project head.

(Someone Else's) Brain Fart

This seems like something you'd see in a sketch comedian's first film, representing his character's lifelong dream: to erect a building that looks like Godzilla in Tokyo. Pretty funny!

Thanks to Ironic Sans for the post.

Robot Chicken Star Wars Special

Looks pretty funny! I've never watched a full episode, but the clips that I've seen on YouTube are great. Check out some trailers and TV spots here - I think the George Lucas one and the full trailer are the best. I wonder if that's Lucas' real voice?

Batman Does Not Need Handcuffs

DAILY MAIL: Police dress up as Batman and Robin to catch drugs suspect
Last updated at 09:28am on 13th November 2006

Two policemen dressed as Batman and Robin captured a suspected drugs offender - in a bizarre sting operation.

The Dynamic Duo - Sgt Tony Smith and PC Mike Holman - pulled on the superhero outfits in a bid to unsettle the suspected baddies.

They pretended to be drunks looking for a fancy dress party and knocked on the door of the suspect's home.

Those inside refused to answer the door to the loud, comically dressed visitors - which was what the officers wanted.

Batman and Robin then went around the back of the property in Weymouth, Dorset, while seven uniformed officers went to the front door.

Those inside the house were PLEASED to see the policemen and complained to them about the fancy dress drunks. They then invited the officers in.

However, one of the men inside the house ran out of the back door on seeing the policeman - to where the superheroes were waiting for him.

Batman - Sgt Smith - gave chase, jumped over a fence and BIFF, POW, THWACK, arrested him.

PC Kevin Eames, said: "The people opened the door immediately and said that they had been alarmed by some drunken people in fancy dress in their garden.

"So the ruse was successful and we were let in."

Sgt Smith added: "Last year police officers dressed up as carol singers, which worked well.

"This was my first costumed acting experience.

"The Batman costume was quite comfortable and not too restricting. I still managed to jump over the fence.

"But it was difficult finding somewhere to put my CS spray. There was nowhere for the handcuffs, but then Batman does not need handcuffs."

PC Eames said: "The bad thing about the operation is that we had to endure hours of terrible puns from PC Holman."

A man aged 22 has been arrested and charged with a drugs offence. He is bailed to appear before Weymouth magistrates.

There were no charges against two other men found at the property.

R.I.P. VHS

VARIETY: VHS, 30, dies of loneliness
The home-entertainment format lived a fruitful life
By DIANE GARRETT

After a long illness, the groundbreaking home-entertainment format VHS has died of natural causes in the United States. The format was 30 years old.

No services are planned.

The format had been expected to survive until January, but high-def formats and next-generation vidgame consoles hastened its final decline.

"It's pretty much over," concurred Buena Vista Home Entertainment general manager North America Lori MacPherson on Tuesday.

VHS is survived by a child, DVD, and by Tivo, VOD and DirecTV. It was preceded in death by Betamax, Divx, mini-discs and laserdiscs.

Although it had been ailing, the format's death became official in this, the video biz's all-important fourth quarter. Retailers decided to pull the plug, saying there was no longer shelf space.

As a tribute to the late, great VHS, Toys 'R' Us will continue to carry a few titles like "Barney," and some dollar video chains will still handle cassettes for those who cannot deal with the death of the format.

Born Vertical Helical Scan to parent JVC of Japan, the tape had a difficult childhood as it was forced to compete with Sony's Betamax format.

After its youthful Betamax battles, the longer-playing VHS tapes eventually became the format of choice for millions of consumers. VHS enjoyed a lucrative career, transforming the way people watched movies and changing the economics of the film biz. VHS hit its peak with "The Lion King," which sold more than 30 million vidcassettes Stateside.

The format flourished until DVDs launched in 1997. After a fruitful career, VHS tapes started to retire from center stage in 2003 when DVDs became more popular for the first time.

Since their retirement, VHS tapes have made occasional appearances in children's entertainment and as a format for collectors seeking titles not released on DVD. VHS continued to make as much as $300 million a year until this year, when studios stopped manufacturing the tapes.

So Variety's trying to write like The Onion now. Weird.
