Happy Beaver Arrives In Southern Norway!

I just got some new pictures from one of my Flickr friends, anotherme's stuff. They're gorgeous! I was tempted to change one to a black and white shot to see if I could make it look like a still from a Bergman film. If you'd like to see more, click here!

Happy Beaver Arrives In Moscow!

My buddy Sergey took a bunch of cool shots of my Happy Beaver toy out and about the downtown area. You can see the rest of them here. Of course, I'll be snagging them for my own Flickr account soon, too! Enjoy.

I'm Back!

I was on a train trip over the weekend - a group of us took a private car from Emeryville, CA to Sparks, NV. We've done it (roughly) once a year for twelve years, and this was the last public excursion. It's always a great time to socialize, see old friends and make new ones.

Roger Colton (the event organizer) suggested throwing a Happy Beaver toy in the mix, and I jumped at the opportunity for pictures in a different locale!

Roger shot this one for me as we slowly made our way up into the mountains. It was really beautiful there, so I tried to take a lot of cool shots in the hopes that some would come out decently (I was using Anita's camera, so my technical confidence wasn't very high). More pics to come soon!

PS - I was in LA on a business trip today, compounding the blogging gap. Sorry for the all the radio silence!

PPS - I didn't take the train picture -
Ryan Martin (one of Ken and Roger's fellow rail fans) did. I wasn't heavily dressed enough to perch out in the snow like that!

The Long And Winding Road (To A New Memory Card)

I finally received the new memory card for my camera today! It took a lot longer to get than I'd hoped...

I ordered it from one retailer, and waited quite a while before finally calling them (I had to call information to get their phone number - ominously, it wasn't on their website). As it turned out, they didn't have the card that I needed in stock, and they'd canceled the order. They said that they'd informed me by e-mail, but I never heard from them. I started over.

I found another website that sold the same card, called them, made sure that they had it in stock, and ordered again. I waited and waited. Still nothing. So I called them back. Apparently, there was something wrong with my billing address. I got the necessary email contact, and sent the correct information to them.

Again, supposedly I was notified, but I don't recall seeing anything. If the emails went to work, maybe they got caught in a spam filter or something. I did get an email notifying me that the problem had been corrected, though, and that the order was now processing.

I've popped the new card into my camera, and happily my theory was correct - the camera works fine - it was the card that was faulty. Now that I know that, I might buy another card so I can keep the camera even longer - not to mention having a backup in case my new one fails.

Olympus C-3040 - R.I.P.?

My digital camera really started giving my guff this morning - I can't reload the memory card without getting error messages. I was getting infrequent ones before, but now it just won't load properly no matter how hard I try.

I've ordered a new memory card in the hopes that the card is the problem and not the camera. I think the set-up's at least six or seven years old, so maybe its time has come. Hopefully not, because I really like shooting with it - I know its quirks and how to get good pictures out of it.

I shot a few new toy photos yesterday, but until the new card arrives, that'll be it for a while. Stay tuned!

UPDATE (1/3/08): Still no memory card. I called the place in New York where I ordered the replacement (there wasn't a phone number on the website - I had to track it down through information... uh oh), and was informed that they no longer had it in stock. They'd sent me an e-mail, apparently, but I never got it.

So I found another website (memorysuppliers.com), and called before ordering to make sure that they had the card in stock. They didn't, but I was assured that the Samsung card would work just as well. Okay...so I ordered it. I doubt I'll get it before the break ends, but hopefully I'll at least get this one!

So...add Soho Electronics to your list with Toy Tokyo on it - the one of companies that you call before ordering anything, because they don't update their websites very well.

If You're Interested Dept.

I thought I'd write up a quick 'tutorial' on how I photograph my toys. Overall, I do it in a pretty straightforward way:

I use my dining room chairs to shoot my toys against. They're brightly colored and curved, so they make great backdrops, as long as the toy isn't very tall. I'll use one of the white chairs or one of the orange ones, depending on the color of the toy.

I usually shoot in my living room early in the morning (between 6 and 10 AM) to use as much natural sunlight as possible. I think the main windows face north, so depending on the time of year, I'll get plenty of light streaming in.

Since the seats of the chairs are curved, sometimes I'll put a sheet of foam core across it if I want to shoot multiple items. One toy might sit at a skewed angle, but I can usually compensate with the camera's angle. If the toy is too big to shoot in a chair, I'll plop the foam core on a stack of plastic tubs and shoot against a wall.

I use a Olympus Camedia C-3040 Zoom (3.3 megapixels). If you actually go to the trouble to get one of these cameras (it's five years old or more), be sure it has a memory card with it - they don't make the cards anymore, and to get one by itself would cost over a hundred dollars.

Ninety percent of the time, I use the macro setting (that's the flower icon on this particular camera), and auto focus (I think that's the default setting) with no flash. If the toy needs a longer depth of field (like a toy car), I'll use the manual focus. If it's the white backdrop, I'll aim the setup into the sun, keeping the whole thing out of full-blast sunlight, but not setting up in the shadows, either. If it's the orange backdrop, I'll aim it all against the sun - the light usually comes over the top of the chair at that time of day and gives me a nice rim-lit effect without washing out the toy or the background. If it's a small object, the orange will drop down to a nice, rich orange color. Using a higher camera angle and tilting down can help improve this effect.

I'll shoot ten or twenty pictures of each toy until I get the angle that I want - sometimes I have to 'find it'. If I'm worried that the auto-focus isn't cutting it, I'll shoot from a variety of distances to cover myself. Then I'll connect the card to my Mac and dump the shots into iPhoto. I'll pick my favorite and use the 'Adjust' tool to do some rudimentary tweaking - this usually involves sharpening, cropping, straightening and brightening the shot, since I don't use flash (I think the light from a flash looks unnatural most of the time).

Once I'm happy, I'll drag it onto my desktop and do the more serious fiddling in Photoshop, since it's a more powerful tool. That can involve separating the whole bg as its own layer, and assembling bits and pieces of multiple copies of it together, in case the natural color ramping isn't working the way that I want. Hue, saturation, contrast, paint flaws (clone paint is your friend) - it's all up for grabs. I have no problem with making the photo look better than the toy, but I try not to go overboard - sometimes I'm successful with that, sometimes not!

And that's it! I post them to Flickr and go on to the next toy. I have gone on to do a second or third shoot with a toy, or a second pass through Photoshop, but for the most part, I've got enough un-shot toys ahead of me that I try to keep moving forward.

Hope that was informative - let me know if you have any questions!

Another New Flickr Group!

I noticed that there wasn't a Hanna-Barbera photo group on the Flickr site, which seemed odd. You'd think it's a general enough topic that someone would've set one up before today. Maybe it's too general, and most folks pick a specific show to feature. Who knows?

Anyhow, as you can see by the link above, I started one! Feel free to join and post lots of images of anything H-B!

I've Started My Own Flickr Group!

I noticed that there didn't seem to be a group expressly devoted to Hasbro toys, so I started one of my own! If you have neat pictures of any Hasbro dolls, toys or games that you'd like to add, drop me an email, and I'll formally invite you to the group!

PS - I'm trying to find a better picture of the old-school Hasbro mascot (the little kid). If you remember what his name is, please drop me a line so I can search for him better!

Photos From Vinyl Toy Network

I've been meaning to post these pictures for a while. Sorry for the delay...

(above) The door of mystery! I was a little disappointed in the size of the show, but to be fair, this is only its second year. There was enough that I wanted to buy as it was, though there wasn't any debuts or show exclusives that I recall.

The line wasn't too bad, though the show did open late. I did manage to get the goodie bag that I got up at 5:30 in the morning / flew into Burbank as early as I could stand to get. Ironically, I didn't want to keep most of the freebies, and wound up giving most of it away. Having to take everything you get at the show back on the plane (in your two permissible carry-ons) kept me from getting too crazy!

Lots of technology in line - not very surprising, really. If they've got money for designer toys, they're probably going to have gadgetry as well!

I think
this is Michelle Valigura, who, along with Amanda Visell, comprise Switcheroo, an art/product company. Amanda made the hand-made Dragon Scout figure that I bought. Pricey, but it's closer to buying a drawing or a painting than a toy. Plus it's a great piece, of course!

UPDATE (10/24/08): Whoops! This isn't Ms. Valigura - it's Sarah Jo Marks, film distributor and wife of toy distributor Dov Kelemer. Pidgeonblog regrets the error.

The Strangeco table. I picked up the Ningyo Project Gosho figure (the traditional version) there. It looks awesome!

The Cardboard Spaceship table had a great selection of toys. I picked up the Mr. Capman Kanser figure there, which I'd been meaning to get for a while.

These are great mini-figures that had come out just recently, so I bought a few. In classic blind-box fashion, I didn't get any of my favorites. Oh, well!

Not surprisingly, Tim Biskup's Flopdoodle online store had a table there. His stuff is terrific, but I didn't buy any of it this time.

More friendly toy salsemen, more than happy to take my money. Not this time!

Cameron Tiede made an appearance, which was a nice surprise! His wife and I chatted while he drew my friend Brian a picture. I can't wait for Cameron's toys!

I bought a nice monochrome Booska & Chamegon vinyl figure set from the table right next to this one. The picture of that booth didn't come out, so this one'll have to do.

There were artier toy makers there, too, some working in other media.

Some people sold clothing and art prints as well.

All in all, it was a good show, and I had fun! Still, I don't know if I'll drop the cash for a round trip plane ticket again just for the event. If I can work it into a weekend trip, though, that'd be worth doing. Yay, toys!

More Studio-In-A-Box Tests

Wow. I just really don't know how to use this. I don't even know if the diffusion cube is arranged properly. I'm assuming that I've set it up the way the makers intended, as it sags horribly if I try to set it lengthwise. These new photos haven't been tweaked very much - just sharpening - as I wanted to see what I was getting in terms of raw, pre-massaged material. The results still aren't very promising.

I tried three different light set-ups this time, as well as moving the whole shebang into the Blair Witch Room (what I call the particularly desolate, unlit end of the basement, back behind the laundry area). First, I put a light on each side of the cube, shining through the sides. I got what I call "Irwin Kershner lighting":

Not bad, but I can still see plenty of the cube's fabric, and it's not really a look I want all of the time. Then I tried backlighting it, while leaving the right-hand light on the side. That didn't work at all:

Then I tried aiming moving the back light into the front, shining through the cube opening. Better, but there's still shadows and fabric wrinkles all over the place:

On all of these shots, I'd placed the figure on a white box, in the hope that I could eliminate the ground seams, but that didn't work - the box just showed up plain as day. So I got rid of the box, and used the same lighting set-up:

Which pretty much brings me back to where I started. It's not that much different from the first shots I took.

So far, none of the pictures look anywhere near as good as the shots on the plastic chairs in natural sunlight. They look like, well, shots taken in a dark room inside a lit tent. This is clearly not going to be a immediate gratification thing. I think I have some options left before I write this off as wasted money:

1) Add the third light. Maybe that'll help wash out some of the cube details.
2) Add a ramp background, for the same reason. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I'm beginning to think that the cube is only good for diffusion, and not for a backdrop. I may be overestimating the versatility of each part of this set-up, which is an easy trap to fall into, as I felt that I was encouraged to feel this stuff would be all that I'd need.
3) Also, maybe the cube can only handle displaying objects well away from the top and bottom seamwork - smaller items elevated into the center of the cube. That'd be disappointing, as I was hoping I could use more of the cube's real estate. #2 might be able to help with this.

Unfortunately, all of the options involve spending more money. I'll see if I can find a good photo supply store nearby, and see what they recommend.

Photo Studio-In-A-Box: Test #2

I thought some of the problems with the previous photo might be that the lights were too high, so I set them on the floor, the left light aimed at the top of the figure, the right light at the lower half. Since the card table was still set up, setting the lights on the floor spread them apart to some degree.

Well, it didn't work at all - almost everything got worse. Even after tweaking it in iPhoto and Photoshop, the bottom seam and fabric are still pretty clear. The back shadows are all over the place, and the good ones (like the one under the hat brim) are a lot weaker. Ugh! I guess I'll try moving the card table out of the way, and placing them closer together next time, as well as a little closer to the cube and the figure. The figure's color is different because I tweaked the 'temperature' sliders in iPhoto.

To be honest, I'm not even sure that I've got the cube set up properly. Maybe there's a better way to postion it so the seams son't show as much. The other potential tactic is to figure out the proper focal length to keep the figure in focus and blur out the background. I took a community college photography course a while back, but most of that has totally fallen out of my head!

Photo Studio-In-A-Box: Test #1

After moving in the card table and setting up the lights, I shot this at about 10 PM. The lights can help blow out a lot of the bg details, but in this case, I think I had the lights much too high. I had to darken the hat in Photoshop to get it back in sync with the rest of the figure, and the bottom seam/fabric are showing up a lot more than I want. Not a home run by any means, but educational.

Photo Studio-In-A-Box: The Set-Up

So I thought I'd devote tonight to setting up a little photo studio in my basement. The one thing that strikes me right away is that anyone else considering this purchase might not want to get the large version - as it turns out, that white nylon cube is BIG. It's about as big as my old 30' picture-tube tv set. I've set up two wide folding tables in front of one another down there, and I still don't have enough room for the lights yet! I'm going to set up our card table in front of those, and hope it's the same height as the other tables.

I think I might pack it in for tonight, and finish the set-up tomorrow morning - if I'm lucky, maybe get one test shot in before I go to work. The instructions do indeed have numerous and sundry warnings about how hot the lights get - they recommend only turning them on when it's shutter time. I haven't even plugged them in, I'm so paranoid now!

It's Here!

At last! My Photo Studio-In-A-Box arrived in the mail yesterday. I'll try setting it up tonight and see how it works. Hopefully, 3:00 PM won't be my cutoff (when the light goes in the living room) for taking toy photos any more!
