Toy OTD: Dark Horse, Yoe! Studio Classic Comic Characters Figurine #37: Eugene The Jeep (2003)

I really liked this series of figurines, but overall I'm very glad that it's over - it's a big line, and I'm not sure I have room for many more!

Once again, Yoe! Studio does a bang-up job - it's a great sculpt of the iconic Popeye character. It manages to be on model for both the character, and the Syroco style of maquette. In many ways, this line is an improvement over the original figurines - the sculpts are less stiff, and the color work is far more lively. Another nice touch is the inclusion of the orchids on the base - orchids are the Jeep's favorite food!

Like the rest of the line, this statuette comes in a terrific-looking tin, and a collectible button. A small pamphlet in the lid describes the history of the character. It was originally sold for $49.99. I can't find one for sale online right now, so get digging on eBay if you want one. Good luck!

New Artwork!

Here's a piece that I recently finished for the Cartoon Art Museum benefit auction. Since I've heard of folks out there printing digital artwork and selling it themselves, I've left out a couple of details that will only appear on the auction art. Enjoy!

Dark Horse Classic Comic Characters #2: Popeye (2000)

To celebrate the release of the Fleischer cartoons on DVD, here's another terrific faux-syroco statue from Dark Horse and Yo! Studios of Popeye! As usual, they've done an incredible job. The sculpt is amazing - a great, dynamic pose without sacrificing strength or balance. The paint work is perfect for the retro style of the series.

It comes packaged in a foam-lined tin box, complete with an informative pamphlet and collectible pin. While these extras are very well-done, I'd prefer simpler packaging and a lower price. I wound up recycling all the tins, as I've bought most of the statues and don't have room for the packaging, too.

Unfortunately, the only example I've found of this statue for sale is this eBay dealer, and it's pretty expensive there - $125.00 +shipping! I think you can find it out there somewhere cheaper than that. Even if you can't, Dark Horse did another Popeye statue in 2004, and it's just as good and much more affordable!
